Duties-Histotechnology Lab Rotation
Each student monitors their waterbath temperatures, cleans their work area and own equipment. If you are finished early, you are not allowed to leave until ALL the duties are completed.

1. Charge Tech | Responsible for ensuring that all duties are completed each day. |
Assist others with duties as necessary | |
Review general supplies and report deficits to instructor (Kimwipes, gloves, Wypalls, biohazard bags, applicator sticks, microtome blades, coverslips) | |
“Check in” point before anyone leaves lab | |
2,3,4. Maintenance: Embedding stations 1,2,3 | Prime dispenser |
Record temperatures of the embedding stations and initial | |
Perform daily maintenance and initial | |
Fill up the embedding stations with pellet wax | |
Make sure molds being cleaned/dried for next lab (upside down and stacked) | |
Clean up (remove frost/excess wax on surfaces) | |
Empty paraffin collecting tray | |
Turn off light on embedding station | |
Check supplies & report deficits to instructor | |
5. Quality/Safety | Visual inspection of all personnel wearing appropriate PPE (gloves, buttoned lab coat, fully enclosed footwear, no bare skin, long hair tied back and safety googles) |
Test/flush eye wash and safety shower (Perform weekly and sign sheet) | |
Check each microtome station that all blades have been removed | |
Check that daily processor maintenance has been completed and there are no alarms or visible reagent leaks | |
Check for QC slides and cut if necessary | |
Ensure microscopes are turned off, unplugged, and covered | |
Record temperature of oven (adjust temperature if required) | |
6. Clean up | Rotate reagents as required. Dispose of used reagents appropriately for recycling or discard. |
Remove marker from empty coplin jars with alcohol swab and take dirty dishes to the ‘prep room’ | |
Ensure individual microtome stations are cleaned and charts initialed | |
Take gel packs to freezer in ‘prep room’ | |
Sweep/scrape floor clear of wax | |
Empty countertop waste containers and replace bags, replace yellow buckets when ¾ full. | |
Clean up fume hoods, empty waste containers, ensure coplin jars are covered and lids are on loosely, turn off lights |
