Transportation Costs

As mentioned in previous sections, when arriving in your community, you will probably need a method of transportation. In many communities, there is no public transportation. In other communities, there may be public transportation, but it is not regularly scheduled (over an hour between buses). If there is public transportation in your community, it will be important to understand the rates and user fees. Students who have public transportation as an option spend $50 monthly.

Cabs are another option for transportation but can be costly and limited depending on the time you wish to leave. Cab companies will vary between towns, and not all towns have a cab company. Prices for cabs will vary depending on the community, cab company, and distance being travelled.

Many people in Nova Scotia choose to purchase their own vehicle. When planning to purchase your own vehicle, you should also include the associated costs of gas, regular maintenance and tires (including winter tires). Students that use vehicles typically spend $1000 per academic year on vehicle maintenance. Monthly vehicle users spend $200 on gas, and $211 on insurance.

Those that choose active transportation, such as biking, usually spend $490 to purchase a bicycle. These students also typically have much higher spending on winter clothing.
