Procedure for Receiving and Processing Specimens

Learning Outcome #4

Process specimens from a variety of sources, to meet the requirement of individual laboratory tests by following the recognized CLSI Standards & Guidelines.

Supplies

  • Safety goggles
  • Gloves
  • Lab Coat
  • Specimens
  • Logbook

Instructions

Follow the procedure below in the exact order.

  1. Don safety goggles, gloves, and lab coat.
  2. Working with one sample at a time. Match the requisition to the specimen.
  3. Ensure the specimen is in the right container.
  4. Check name, health card number and DOB matches.
  5. If there is a discrepancy, fill out the form provided. Notify the instructor.
  6. In the accession log, document today’s date, patients name, HCN, DOB and your initials.
  7. Write the accession number on the requisition and specimen.
  8. Put the specimen back into the bag along with the requisition in the outside sleeve of the bag.
  9. Put the bag in the correct bucket labelled with the department.
  10. Proceed to the next specimen.
