Spill Clean-up Procedure

Learning Outcome #2

  • The medical laboratory technologist conducts their professional practice according to established protocols, HHS Department MLT Diploma Safety Manual, CSMLS Safety Guidelines and existing legislations.

Supplies

  • Kim towels
  • Diluted bleach
  • Forceps

Instructions

Read the list of required equipment and supplies and the procedural steps. Follow the procedural steps in the exact order.

  1. Put on gloves and eye protection
  2. Assemble equipment and supplies
  3. Cover spill with a Kim towel
  4. In a circular motion working from the outside in, soak the paper towel with bleach.
  5. Label paper towel with the time of the next step and the number one with a circle around it.
  6. After the 30 minutes is up, remove the paper towel with forceps and discard in biohazard bucket.
  7. Repeat 1-4 and label paper towel with #2.
  8. When time is up remove paper towel with forceps, discard in biohazard buck.
  9. Proceed with regular clean up and discard paper towel in regular garbage.
