Procedure for Weighing with an Analytical Balance
Learning Outcome #3
- Prepares reagents, standards, and solutions to industry standard for use in the clinical lab, utilizing common lab equipment according to established protocols.
Supplies
- Electronic Analytical Balance
- Disposable weigh boats
- Chemical
- Distilled water
- Beakers
- Volumetric
- Pipettes
Instructions
Follow the procedure below in the exact order.
- Assemble equipment and supplies. Open the side glass doors of the balance, and clean weighing pan and base with the brush provided.
- Analytical balances require a draft-free location on a solid bench that is free of vibrations.
- Before weighing, make certain the balance is properly leveled. Observe the leveling bubble and adjust the two rear balance feet that serve as leveling screws.
- Press the tare button to zero.
- Label the weigh boat with the chemical name.
- Place the weighing boat on the balance pan.
- Close the sliding doors, and press tare again.
- Open the doors and carefully add the substance to be weighed up to the desired mass.
