Preparing a Reagent Assessment
Learning Outcome #3
- Prepares reagents, standards, and solutions to industry standard for use in the clinical lab, utilizing common lab equipment according to established protocols.
Instructions
Follow the procedure steps in the exact order.
Have the instructor check off each step.
Procedural Step | Instructor |
---|---|
Assemble equipment and supplies | |
Place a clean, dry funnel in the mouth of a labelled volumetric flask. | |
Carefully transfer the chemical in the labelled measuring boat into the funnel. | |
Wash the chemical into the flask with small amounts of distilled water or the required solvent for the reagent. | |
Rinse the measuring boat three to five times with small portions of distilled water or the required solvent until all the chemical has been transferred from boat into the volumetric flask (add each rinsing to the flask). | |
Rinse the funnel with distilled water or the required solvent and remove the funnel from the volumetric flask. | |
Dissolve the chemical in the flask by using a swirling motion. Some chemicals are more difficult to dissolve than others. Dissolving the chemical occasionally becomes a problem and requires additional attention. | |
Add distilled water or the required solvent to about 0.5” below the calibration line on the flask. Allow a few seconds for drainage of the fluid above the calibration line, and then carefully add distilled water or the required solvent to the calibration line (bottom of meniscus must be exactly on the calibration mark). | |
Seal the flask with a glass stopper and mix well by inverting at least 20 times. |
