Student Health and Wellness Services

Your overall health and wellness is important to us. As a student (domestic and international), you’ll have access to many health and wellness services that you can use throughout the year to maintain a basic level of health and ensure that preventable medical emergencies don’t interrupt the completion of your academic program. Here are a few we’d like to bring to your attention.

Virtual health care

Full and part-time students studying in Canada and enrolled in programs of 15 weeks or longer (domestic and international) can access myvirtualdoctor. This service provides unlimited 24/7 virtual access to licensed health experts, including doctors and nurse practitioners, to support non-emergency treatment as well as triage to other required health services and facilities when necessary. There is a fee for this service included with your tuition if you meet eligibility requirements. Coverage extends for 12 months and you can add dependents to this service free of charge. If you don’t require this service, you can opt out by the deadline:

  • For students starting their program in September, the opt out deadline is October 5
  • For students starting their program in January, the opt out deadline is February 5
  • For students starting programs at any other time of year, the opt out deadline is 30 days from the start date of your program

Details on our virtual health care service are available on the Student Benefits Plan website.

Student health and dental plan

Full-time students enrolled in programs of 20 weeks or longer, as well as full and part-time international students, will be automatically added to a preventative health and dental program. There is a fee for this service included with your tuition if you meet eligibility requirements. The benefits provided cover prescriptions, support for vision care, extended paramedical and dental benefits as well as out-of-province travel.

INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY HEALTH INSURANCE (ehi)

International students are also enrolled in emergency health benefits if they do not have Nova Scotia health insurance (MSI). This coverage supports students in the case of medical emergencies that might require hospitalization, which can be quite costly.

All students are encouraged to take a minute to review specific plan details, eligibility requirements, addition of family coverage or opt out/opt in provisions (if applicable). All these details can be found on our benefits website.

MyWellness mental health support

No matter how busy you may be, your mental health needs to be a priority. Mental health can affect every aspect of your life, including your academic performance, and relationships. Science has shown that ignoring your mental health can even change your brain’s anatomy. With myWellness, you can do a mental health assessment in 5 to 10 minutes and immediately access tools for stress reduction and for managing your symptoms. It’s free and anonymous. You also have access to secure and confidential video counselling anytime, anywhere, with a practitioner matched with your needs.

Any NSCC student can access myWellness resources. And every student can access up to 3 free hours of counselling. You may have coverage available through your student benefits program (if enrolled) or other comparable coverage to support additional counselling appointments. Once your session is complete, you can submit the receipt for reimbursement. Visit the benefits website for details.
