Academic Expectations

As a student, you’re responsible for all aspects of your performance and conduct, including:

  • Regularly attending classes and being on time
  • Having all required textbooks and supplies
  • Adhering to applicable deadlines
  • Being willing to work independently and in groups
  • Following directions with professionalism and a positive attitude
  • Being respectful of others
  • Studying on a regular basis to complete your work

You will be expected to be familiar with College policies – we’ll share a number of those in this book as well as in other places (like in NSCC & Me, on the NSCC website and on Connect, our college intranet). Typically, while reviewing the course outline with students, faculty host a discussion about class rules to ensure a safe and respectful learning environment whether learning online and/or face-to-face.

When classes begin, faculty share two important documents you must review: a course outline and a workplan. Download your course outlines from Brightspace before the end of each term to review the skills you’ve learned. The outline describes the course and lists outcomes you must achieve to obtain a passing grade.

The workplan identifies:

  • The instructor’s contact information
  • Required textbooks/resources
  • A tentative schedule
  • Assessment and evaluation methods and related deadlines, and the faculty’s expectations as related to their class and NSCC’s policies.

Copyright

NSCC is committed to complying with copyright law and respecting the intellectual property rights of owners of copyright materials in all formats.

As a student, you’re required to abide by NSCC’s Use of Copyright Materials Policy and Fair Dealing Guidelines which are outlined on Connect.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

For more information about academic integrity and copyright, ask your campus library staff.

Advice from an NSCC student:

1. Try to attend every class, even if online. It can be difficult to catch up if you’ve lost time.

2. Check NSCC’s email at least daily, to get all the important announcements in time.

3. Develop a relationship with your instructor. If you need help or don’t understand an assignment, ask to meet up with them outside of the class. The quicker you get your questions answered the better. Don’t wait until the day before the assignment is due. Instructors are on your side, make good use of them!
