Budgeting and Finances

As you prepare for the end of the year or graduation, now is a good time to consider the steps you can take to help you financially as you transition out of school and into a summer job or career.

Money matters check-in

Review the questions below to help you assess your finances.

  • If you’re a student loan borrower, check in with your lender(s) to identify repayment options available and next steps. Doing this proactively will help keep your loan(s) in good standing.
  • Consider meeting with a financial advisor to learn how to prioritize what debt to tackle and when. A general rule is to start with debt that has higher interest rate. Getting that out of the way first will save you money in the long run.
  • KOFE (Knowledge of Financial Education), a financial wellness service offered free through NSCC’s mywellness, provides free one-on-one financial coaching. Make sure to create an account and reap the benefits of the amazing tools and resources found inside.
  • Continue working with your budget. If you’re graduating, download a copy of your budget from the Student Awards Portal to use as a guide for establishing a more permanent one.
  • Keep your expenses low while you search for a job and consider part-time work or interim contract work to avoid going into a budget deficit.
  • Visit NSCC’s financial literacy course on Brightspace. Specifically, take some time to review the modules on saving and debt. You can find out how to access the free course on the Financial Literacy Brightspace Course  page on Connect.
