Getting Involved
Getting involved in activities outside of the classroom is a great way to make new friends, build employability skills and give back to the community.
By participating in organizations or student programs, you can develop leadership and communication skills, event-planning expertise and interpersonal skills, to name a few. All of these can help you enhance your resume, build your portfolio and support you in job interviews.
Get involved with Enactus, where you can have the chance to collaborate on projects to benefit your communities, both local and beyond using your own entrepreneurial talents.
How to get involved
- Talk with a student services advisor about the benefits of getting involved on campus and identify opportunities that fit your interests.
- Visit the Student Association website to explore opportunities at your campus or online.
- Start a club or chartered organization. This is a fantastic opportunity to share a personal hobby or passion with your fellow students. Applications can be found on the Student Association website or you can email them for an application package and support in completing it.
- Support an event or service by volunteering. Connect with your campus Student Association directly to chat about upcoming activities you might be interested in assisting with. Contact information can be found on the student association website.
Advice from an NSCC student
I wish I had known that the Student Association gives out grants for learning opportunities outside of school. (The info may have been in the information I received but somehow I missed it. Luckily, my instructor let our class know. As a result, I was able to attend an industry conference related to my area of study.)
Being involved in social groups can make your college experience much better. Even if you start to get overwhelmed with schoolwork, it is important to make time for other things. The connections that you make can be just as valuable as the thing that you learn in class.
