Policy Quick Reference

For you to succeed, it’s important to understand your roles and responsibilities as a student. These roles and responsibilities are outlined in several policies and procedures. As a student, it’s critical that you read and become familiar with these documents because they can impact your overall student experience.

The following section provides several examples of policies and procedures that govern the student experience and your expected behaviours. It will also help you identify the types of questions each policy might answer for you.

Student Community Standards This policy is part of a suite of College policies and procedures that ensure the College Community has a shared understanding and commitment to the standards of behaviour required of members. Watch this quick video to learn more about student community standards.
Academic and student services Academic Accommodations Policy This policy outlines how students with documented disabilities can access academic accommodations.
Academic Integrity Policy Conduct that falls short of our standards has repercussions and may amount to academic misconduct and sanctions under the Academic Integrity Policy.
Academic Performance Policy This policy outlines expectations of academic performance.
Academic Probation Policy Standards of academic performance for the student as well as consequences of failing to meet these standards is outlined in this policy.
Program Progression Policy NSCC is committed to establishing the correlation between course load, student status, and tuition and fees to support transparency and accuracy.
Grading Policy and Evaluation and Assessment Policy These policies outline the methods for evaluating students’ learning outcomes required for the successful completion of their program and courses.
Graduation Requirements and Program Progression Policy This policy outlines graduation requirements for College credential programs to support students in planning their studies.
Library Borrowing Policy This policy outlines how to get registered with NSCC Libraries, borrow materials and equipment, and request resources from other libraries.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Policy This policy outlines how prior formal, informal, and experiential learning can be applied towards academic programs.
Student Appeals Policy Students have a right to challenge academic and nonacademic decisions affecting academic progress and standing in a fair, transparent and timely way.

 

Safe and Respectful
Learning Environment
Drug and Alcohol Use Policy This policy promotes a safe and healthy learning environment by reducing the risks associated with the use of alcohol and drugs. It strives to eliminate the effects of drug or alcohol abuse on the College and members of the NSCC community.
Occupational Health & Safety Policy This policy outlines NSCC’s commitment to ensuring College premises are safe and healthy for all who visit the College.
Respectful Community Policy We all share the responsibility of treating each other and those who enter the College with respect and consideration. Each of us have a responsibility to foster a climate of understanding and mutual respect in all areas of the learning and working environment.
Sexual Violence Policy NSCC is committed to fostering an environment in which all members of the College community are safe, secure and free from sexual violence in all forms.
Smoke Free Policy NSCC is committed to providing a smoke free environment in compliance with provincial legislation and municipal by-laws.
Privacy and Technology Confidentiality of Student Information Policy NSCC manages the collection, use and disclosure of the personal information provided by its applicants and students.
Email Policy This policy guides staff and students in the effective and efficient use of College email while representing the values and priorities of the College.
Technology Resources - Acceptable Use Policy NSCC promotes responsible and ethical behaviour that’s productive and safe for all users when using internet-connected, College technology resources — such as computers, wi-fi services, network and internet access, audio visual technologies and telephony devices and service — both on campus and around the world.
Social Media Policy All students and employees are expected to follow this policy and know that inappropriate use of social media can result in sanctions.
Student Awards Student Awards Policy This policy serves to provide equitable and transparent standards and processes in establishing awards and in determining who will receive them.
Work Integrated Learning Work Integrated Learning Policy This policy outlines roles and responsibilities and references the procedures guiding placements, insurance requirements and risk management related to work-integrated learning.
Copyright Use of Copyright Materials Policy Students have a responsibility to respect the rights of copyright owners, and know how to legally use or reproduce copyright materials.
