Sustainability at NSCC

At Nova Scotia Community College’s 14 campuses, sustainability is woven into nearly all aspects of student and employee life. Sustainability is a key organizational value that is embedded into our strategic priorities. It encompasses how we design, construct, and operate our buildings; how we manage resources; and how we provide a safe, healthy, equitable environment in which to work and learn. From photovoltaic arrays that feed into the province’s electrical grid and a multitude of electric vehicle charging stations, to a robust recycling program that diverts 70% of waste away from landfills, NSCC takes its commitment to positively impacting the sustainability of the province very seriously.

Our efforts are guided by our commitment to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Goals are designed to be a blueprint for peace and prosperity and include aspirations for environmental, social and economic sustainability. The College has earned a reputation for forward-thinking and setting an example for others to follow. In fact, in 2021, NSCC received international recognition for its efforts to advance the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Students are encouraged to become involved in sustainability during their time at NSCC. Students can join their campus sustainability committees, partake in sustainability events that are hosted throughout the year and enroll in co-curricular activities such as the Student Association and Enactus. Students will also find on their campus comprehensive waste management systems and recycling programs in line with municipal requirements, to find out more visit your municipal waste sorting guidelines here.

creating sustainability goals

Sustainability starts with you! Although sustainable development issues like climate change, gender equality and food insecurity are large scope problems, decisions that you make in your day-to-day life can have a real measurable impact.

Complete the following goal setting practice to identify ways that you can make your life more sustainable and contribute to NSCC’s sustainability culture on campus. When setting your goals, focus on:

  • Things you can control. Everyone can do something, but no one can do everything!
  • Creating habits. Small changes that become every day habits can have a large impact.
  • Issues that inspire you. Start by taking action in areas that you’re passionate about.
