This exercise is to enhance testing and work performed in the student labs. Exercises are not compulsory but students are encouraged to complete the exercises and then request an answer key from the instructor to keep on track with their learning. If students find they are having difficulty with any exercise they can request additional help from the instructor.

A 23 year old woman is admitted to the hospital in labor. A type and screen is ordered for possible caesarean section. Initial testing results are as follows:

A group O red cell panel is tested to determine the specificity of the antibody(ies). The results are given in the panel on the following page (labeled “Mom and Baby” but is the mom’s serum/plasma). Please answer the following questions using the patient results.

  1. What antibody(ies) is/are present?
  2. What antibody(ies) cannot be ruled out?
  3. What selected cells (if any) will be required (specifically, what antigens are present and “how” are they present)?
  4. Do you have enough information to determine if this patient is a candidate for postpartum Rh immune globulin prophylaxis?
    1. If not, what information do you require?
