16 Convert to Language Suited to the Audience

Faculty Objective

  • Use Generative AI to make writing suitable for the intended audience.

For faculty who are experts in their subject, explaining a topic at a level that is appropriate to a novice audience can be one of the greatest challenges of course preparation. Using Generative AI to convert your writing into text that uses more accessible language can aid student comprehension. Consider this use for course notes, developing PowerPoint slides, or for language in assessments and evaluations.

Considerations

  • Academic Integrity should be top of mind in using this technique. Include an acknowledgement of any use of generative AI that specifies how it was used.
  • Who owns the copyright of the information you are asking Generative AI to adapt the language of?
    • You: in this case Generative AI can be a useful companion as long as you acknowledge the use and specify what it was used to do
    • Someone else: it is not recommended to use Generative AI to make someone else’s writing more approachable as this may be a violation of copyright.
  • Use of Generative AI to create content may limit your ability to claim something as your own Intellectual Property or to share it through Open Licenses. These are topics that are still being debated.
  • Generative AI programs have input limits that will impact the amount of information that you can ask them to reformat at one time.
  • Make sure to review the Generative AI output for clarity and to ensure that the meaning has not changed.
  • Please refer to cautions in the Introduction that apply to all activities using Generative AI.
