Use Footnotes
Open textbooks at NSCC use footnotes in place of in-text citations linked to a full reference.
This best practice allows us to meet both academic integrity and Creative Commons attribution requirements while also presenting text that is easier to read and follow. Note: The attribution information is still discoverable and readable by the reader.
Pressbooks supports the automatic creation of footnotes and chapter endnotes with a built-in tool.
How to Add Footnotes
To create a footnote in your book, open the visual editor for a chapter where you’d like to create a new footnote:
- Place your cursor where you want your footnote marker to appear
- Click the “FN” button in the visual editor
- Enter your desired footnote content in the ‘Footnote Content’ window which appears and Click ‘OK’.
- A footnote shortcode will be inserted in the location you have selected.
- The short code is visible in the text editor. The short code contains text between opening and closing square brackets that include the word ‘footnote’.
