Laboratory Safety Tips

Lab Objectives

Demonstrates knowledge and performs lab practices in accordance with the Safety, Analytical, Quality and
Professionalism Competencies of the CSMLS MLT profile as applicable.

  1. Proper training is essential.  Follow the practices learned from the Laboratory Safety CSMLS Guidelines (8th Ed.), WHMIS/OHS training, and the Safe Practices and Professional Responsibilities course as well guidelines from the Medical Laboratory Technology Program safety manual and your instructor.
  2. All lab procedures must be followed, and all lab supplies and equipment properly maintained.
  3. Follow all posted safety signs and labels warning of safety hazards. An SDS manual is available in the lab.
  4. Note positions of eyewash stations and the overhead shower.
  5. Know emergency response procedures.
  6. No eating or drinking in the lab.  No gum chewing or application of cosmetics.
  7. A lab coat must always be worn – long, buttoned/snapped up.
  8. Non-permeable fully enclosed footwear must always be worn.
  9. Hair, beads and jewelry must not impede vision or be susceptible to getting caught in equipment or becoming contaminated.  Hair longer than chin length must be pulled back.  Ball caps are not allowed and hoods and sweater sleeves must be tucked inside the lab coat.
  10. Gloves are to be worn when working with biological materials, chemicals, and when performing maintenance on analyzers.
  11. Perform hand washing only at the designated clean sink.
  12. Blood aliquot tubes are disposed of in yellow buckets.
  13. Sharps are disposed of in sharps containers or yellow buckets as appropriate.
  14. Maintain good housekeeping, e.g. minimize clutter, clean up as you go.
