CA 600 Analyzing Patients

Running patients with non-barcoded labels[1]

Confirm that maintenance has been completed before analyzing patients

  • Always check the maintenance log to make sure all daily maintenance has been completed.
  • If maintenance is not done, you will need to complete it before continuing.

Confirm that the appropriate reagents are on board and enough for testing.

  • Although it is done with maintenance, it is still a good idea to make sure you check reagents before starting.
  • Ensure there is enough reagent on board to complete the tests.
  • If not, replenish the reagents as needed.

Document the patient information on your worksheet

  • Always document the patient information on the worksheet before loading the sample and ordering tests.
  • Never work with a worksheet with no patient information!

Label a 2mL cup with patient information

  • Label the cup with the ID #, last name and first initial.
  • Make sure the cups are clearly labelled and legible.

Place patient cup in the sample rack.

  • Always start at position 1, and so on.

In the main menu, press ID No. Entry

  • This will open a numerical keypad to enter the patient’s ID.
  • The keypad cannot generate letters so you will have to use the ID number (MRN or accession #).

Order the tests requested

  • Just above the ID No. are the list of tests to choose from. Press the test to order them
  • Take note that each test is numbered and represents the numbering sequence to the right.
  • If you order the wrong test, you can press the test again and it will be deleted.
  • You can also use arrow keys to move between rack positions, if needed.

Open the sampler drawer at the bottom and gently load the sample rack in position.

  • The slotted areas on the rack are facing out towards the technologist.
  • The slit in the bottom of the rack is on the left side and is hooked onto the small metal bar on the left side of the drawer.
  • Make sure the rack is flat and not tilted. Be careful not to spill any samples when loading the rack.

Once the rack is in place gently shut the sample drawer.

  • Make sure the drawer is closed completely of the analyzer will not go, and an alarm will sound.

Press start on the top right had side of the screen to begin analysis.

  • When the analyzer begins it will indicate “Analyzing” at the top of the screen.
  • Below you will see “Replace Rack? No!”. This means you cannot open the sample drawer or place another rack on the analyzer.
  • Once analysis is close to completion, or completed, the sign will change to “Replace Rack? YES!”
  • This means you can open the sample drawer, remove the rack and load another rack.

Remove the thermal printout and write the patients full name and ID# on the paper and attach to your worksheet.

  • It is important to write the patients’ name on the printout.
  • You only have a small area to document the information.
  • Confirm the patient ID to make sure you have the correct patient.
  • Staple the results to the worksheet, before passing them in.

Properly transcribe the patients results onto the worksheet provided.

  • Ensure that your results are legible. Review the results to make sure they make sense and document any actions you need to take to ensure you report a result reflective of the patient’s current condition.
  • If the results are prolonged or shortened, make note, and communicate possible reason(s).
  • If you do not get results, make a note.
  • If the results are invalid, communicate possible reasons.
  • NOTE: You maybe required to repeat the test(s).
