Standard – Guest Standards
The Guest Policy at NSCC Campus Housing allows students to invite guests into their living spaces, with the understanding that students are responsible for their guests’ behavior and adherence to Campus Housing Community Standards. Guests must be registered, and the host student must ensure that the guest complies with all housing policies.
Summary of Expectations:
- Students must register all guests, including parents and family members, regardless of visit length or time period.
- Hosts are required to accompany their guest(s) at all times, except when the guest uses the washroom.
- Hosts are responsible for their guest’s actions and must ensure that guests understand and follow Campus Housing Community Standards. If a guest violates the standards, the host may be held accountable.
- A student can have a guest stay overnight for a maximum of three (3) consecutive nights, with no more than nine (9) overnight visits per month.
- Overnight guests cannot be minors (17 years old or younger).
- Campus Housing staff have the right to limit the number of guests or deny guest access at any time throughout the year and without notice in extenuating circumstances and/or when there is a concern for the safety and security of the Campus Housing community.
Having guests in Campus Housing is a privilege, not a right. Guests are welcome to visit, but their presence must not disrupt the community or violate housing standards.
This policy helps ensure the safety and comfort of the NSCC Campus Housing community by promoting responsible guest behavior and maintaining clear guidelines for students. By respecting these standards, students contribute to a positive and secure living environment for all.
Examples of Breaches of Guests Standards
The following are examples of violations that may occur in Campus Housing. Please note that these examples are fictitious and have been created by NSCC Housing & Student Life staff as hypotheticals, based on years of experience working in housing. They are not reflective of current student violations. Responses to violations may vary depending on the specific circumstances, including the severity of the behavior, the impact on others, and any prior violations. The details of each situation will be carefully considered before determining the appropriate action.
- A student invites a friend to their room and registers them at the desk. The guest stays for a few hours, and the host does not ensure that the guest follows expectations for courtesy hours, creating a noise disturbance. Although there are no major issues, the student is not adhering to the guest registration policy and has not fully ensured their guest’s compliance with Campus Housing rules, which causes a minor disruption to the community. (Level 1 Violation)
- A student has repeatedly failed to register their guests. Despite multiple reminders from Campus Housing staff, the student continues to host unregistered guests. The students’ actions disrupt the peace and safety of the community by allowing guests into their room without proper registration, which compromises the security of the building and violates campus housing standards. Additionally, when a staff member asks the student to comply and register the guest, the student is dismissive and uncooperative, refusing to take responsibility for the situation. (Level 2 Violation)
- A student sneaks a guest, who has previously been banned from campus, into their living space with the intent for a five-night stay, despite knowing that the guest has been prohibited from being on campus. The student deliberately bypasses the Guest Policy by failing to register the guest and not seeking approval for the extended stay. Upon investigation, it is discovered that the student was fully aware of the guest’s ban but chose to hide the guest’s presence, thus endangering the safety and security of the campus community. (Level 3 Violation)
